How to Make Your Bird Feel Good During Molting

A bird's feathers are similar to human fingernails; the body is incapable of repairing them as it would a cut or an abrasion on the skin. Birds pay great attention to the care of their feathers, but wear and tear is unavoidable and that's where molting comes in. Molting is the process of growing new feathers, which push into the sockets of the old ones and completely replace them. Molting is adaptive to the seasons, where feathers may grow with more color or density according to the bird's current needs. Due to the stressful nature of the process, pet owners should give their small friends a measure of special care to help them stay comfortable while they undergo these changes.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the temperature in the room steady. A bird's feathering thins out during molting and he will become more prone to chills.

    • 2

Provide your bird with a quiet and secluded location in the house. Place a cover on part of the cage to darken the area and give the bird a place to retreat. The process of molting weakens and stresses domesticated breeds in the same manner as wild ones; nature tells them to be silent and remain hidden during the process.

    • 3

Let your bird sleep eight to 12 hours a night. Provide an environment of total darkness.

    • 4

Mist your pet daily with warm water. Misting keeps the feathers soft and helps to alleviate your pet's discomfort. Don't mist your pet if it seems bothered by the process.
