How to Mount a Bird's Nest to a Cage

For many birders, part of enjoying their pet birds is cultivating a breeding pair. There is a lot of work involved in assisting a breeding pair to mate and in providing a safe habitat for raising their young. Adding a nesting box to your bird cage is one of the first steps needed to prepare for the new baby chicks.

Instructions

    • 1

Line the inside of the nest box with rubber shelf liner before mounting the nest box. This will give the babies some grip on the bottom and prevent splayed legs. Also add pet bedding, which will give the breeding birds a foundation for their nest.

    • 2

Look on your cage for the opening that̵7;s designed for mounting the bird̵7;s nest. It will have a door that you can open to mount the nest box. At the bottom of the opening on your cage, on the outside, attach a metal support platform. These can be found at pet stores near the bird̵7;s nests section. It will have long pieces of wire that extend from the back of it with clips on them. Attach these clips to the bird cage, positioned so that the platform is at the bottom of the opening in the cage for the nest box.

Lift the opening on the side of the cage and place the nest box on the platform. Bungee strap it around the cage from top to bottom, going underneath the platform. Anchor the strap on the top and bottom to the cage.

    • 4

Test the nest box to ensure there are no gaps between it and the cage. Make sure the bungee cord doesn̵7;t interfere with opening the top of the nest box.

    • 5

Put plenty of nesting material inside the cage. This includes whatever the birds can chew up and use for nesting material, such as shreddable toys, paper or canvas bags.

    • 6

Place a weight on top of the nesting box lid to ensure the breeding birds don̵7;t inadvertently fly out of the top of the box.
