Does Loud Noise Affect Parakeets?

Birds are extremely sensitive to sounds, and in some cases, loud, sudden noises have been known to kill birds. And like other common household threats -- such as chemicals, ceiling fans, open containers of water, and other pets -- loud noises should be mitigated by parakeet owners as much as possible.
  1. Reduced Immunity

    • Loud noises from television, music, gunshot and nearby trains stress birds -- including parakeets -- to the point where it can compromise their immune systems. This means that your parakeet will become more susceptible to diseases and infections. Consider placing your birdcage in a room with the least amount of noise if someone in your household is prone to continuously play loud television or music, and regularly assess the health of your pet.

    Stress Habits

    • Loud noises can encourage parakeets to exhibit stress behaviors and habits that may include feather picking, screaming and biting. Stress habits may have many other causes, however, including insufficient mental stimulation, change of environment and emotional trauma. If your parakeet is exhibiting any of these signs, examine all possible causes when seeking a remedy.

    Death

    • In some cases, sudden loud noises have been known to kill birds. The sudden stress can result in heart attacks. A bird experiencing a heart attack will usually fall to the floor of its cage, and flop around as if experiencing a seizure. For this reason, parakeet owners are highly discouraged from placing parakeet cages near televisions.

    Accommodating Your Parakeet

    • To best accommodate your parakeet, invest in a thick cage cover that will dampen any nearby sounds. Likewise, place your bird in the quietest room of the house. If your home is in a noisy area, you may be able to cheaply improve a single room's noise dampening traits by investing in noise-canceling window coverings.
