- Separate any infected birds from healthy ones.
- Place the infected bird in a hospital or quarantine cage, well away from other birds.
Step 2: Treat the Infested Bird
- Gently mist the bird using a bird safe insecticide spray for mites that contains pyrethrin.
- Follow directions given by the manufacturer for how to use the spray and how often.
- Make sure to apply to the underside of the wings and around the vent area of the bird.
- Avoid contact with eyes.
- Spray once a week until infestation has been eliminated.
Step 3: Clean the Cage and Surroundings
- Thoroughly clean the infected bird's cage, toys, and all other surfaces the bird has come into contact with, including the floor of the room where the cage is located.
- This should include anything within a five-foot radius.
- Use very hot water and soap, and then be sure to rinse everything thoroughly.
Step 4: Launder Accessories
- Wash any washable items, such as cage covers and food/water dishes, in hot, soapy water, then rinse thoroughly.
Step 5: Vacuum
- Thoroughly vacuum the area around the cage, as well as the entire room where the cage is located.
- Be sure to empty and clean the vacuum cleaner after use.
Step 6: Dispose of Contaminated Material
- Remove and properly dispose of any bedding or other material within the cage.
- Seal this in a plastic bag and place it outside.
Step 7: Treat Other Birds
- If other birds may have been exposed, have them checked by a vet, quarantine or isolate them, and treat them as soon as signs of mites become noticeable.
