How to Care for Swans

Swans are generally considered beautiful and graceful birds. These waterfowl are closely related to ducks and geese. Swans are wild creatures and thrive in many natural environments. There are seven different species of swans living around the world. Trumpeter swans and mute swans are common in North America. Caring for swans is not difficult, however they do best in warmer climates.

      Create a freshwater habitat for the swans. Man-made lakes or larger ponds work perfectly. The lake or pond should not connect with any other bodies of water such as rivers or streams.

      Stock the pond with weeds and grasses for the swans to eat. They also eat tadpoles and insects.

      Provide a sheltered area for cold weather. An area of shrubs, bushes or small trees will work.
