How do you induce vomiting quickly in case of poisonings?

Never induce vomiting unless specifically directed to do so by a physician or poison control center and only if the poisoned person is conscious**

If you are instructed to induce vomiting, here is what you should do:

1. Give Syrup of Ipecac only once

*Children: (6 months to 12 years): 1 tablespoon (15 mL)

* Adults and children over 12 years of age: 2 tablespoons (30 mL).

* Give water after Ipecac is given

If the person does not vomit within 20 minutes after syrup of Ipecac is administered:

*Call the nearest poison control center for further instructions.

Do NOT Give Syrup of Ipecac:

* If the person is unconscious or has lost gag reflex

*If the poison was a strong acid or alkali (drain cleaner, lye)

*If the person has seizures or is not breathing

2. Finger Sweep

*This method should only be used as a last resort if ipecac is not available.

*Stick your fingers down the person's throat until they gag and then sweep the fingers to the back of the mouth to stimulate the gag reflex.

After vomiting:

* Monitor breathing, pulse, and level of consciousness.

*Give sips of water after the person stops vomiting until poison control or medical assistance arrives.

Contact a poison control center immediately after you have induced vomiting or if you have any questions.
