As nutrient-rich deep water rises to the surface in upwelling zones, it feeds primary producers, such as phytoplankton. These microscopic plants convert carbon dioxide and sunlight into energy, forming the base of the marine food web. Without upwelling, primary productivity would be much lower and fisheries would decline significantly.
