Tasty Treats You Can Feed to Your Budgie

If you love your little birdie, not only must you be careful about what it eats, but also what it actually likes to eat. Budgies love to eat; they are the regular foodies of the avian world. However, this is where you need to be careful: pet budgies have a tendency to become fat very easily. You must keep a balance between the different nutrients in the food, while trying to make it as tasty as possible. People hate going on a diet; birds like it even less. So if you don't want a cranky pet who attempts to snap at your fingers every time you near its cage, the food must be enjoyable for the budgie.
  1. Nutrition is Always a Priority

    • Giving your budgie a healthy treat is your way of saying "I love you and want you to live a long life." Unfortunately, your effort may not be greeted with open wings if the treats aren't appetizing. You can give your budgie the seed mix available in standard shops, but try to keep the hulled oats in the mix at a minimum because they are high in calories. Also, try to buy small packets and give them fresh instead of stocking up a big saver pack. If you want to offer a homemade treat, you can add some nutritious and flavorsome ingredients in the bird seed, like small bits of bagel or muffin (preferably whole-wheat) dipped in peanut butter or chopped up raisins.

    They are Special

    • If it's your birthday, you go out to the finest restaurants and eat delicious dishes. So why won't your budgie get an extra special treat on its birthday (or purchase day, maybe)? Although we haven't quite progressed to fine dining for birds yet, you can provide your budgie an extravagant meal right at your home. Budgies like their fruits and seeds; you can experiment and mix regular seed mix, popcorn, strawberries, dried apples, oranges and bananas to create a texture and taste your budgie won't be able to get enough of. You can also dip the seeds or nuts in peanut butter, yogurt, honey or applesauce.

    They Know It' a Holiday

    • When people stream in and out of your house, greeting you in loud voices, your pet knows it's a special time of the year. You can give your budgie an edible gift on holidays. Mix granola, milk, baby food, brown sugar, nuts and baking powder proportionately. Bake the mix in a preheated oven for thirty minutes. Allow to cool and voila!: your budgie's very own cookie bar. You can also collect pine cones, cover them in peanut butter and sprinkle bird seed on them -- another tasty treat budgies love.

    Something Fresh, Something Green

    • Some spoiled little budgies may not want to eat fruits and vegetables right away, but keep trying and after a while they may enjoy them. Tangerines, apples, melons, guavas, kiwi fruits, plums and strawberries are few fruits budgies love. They are also fond of nibbling at carrots, silverbeet, spinach, sweetcorn and broccoli. While feeding fruits and vegetables, make sure that they are washed well, chopped into bite-size pieces and cleaned of all pits and cores.
