The respiratory system is a system of organs that work together to get oxygen into the body and remove carbon dioxide. It’s made up of your lungs, windpipe, nose, mouth, and throat.
Here’s how the respiratory system works:
1. You breathe in air through your nose or mouth.
2. The air travels down your windpipe and into your lungs.
3. In the lungs, the oxygen from the air is taken up by tiny blood vessels called capillaries.
4. The carbon dioxide from your blood is released into the air.
5. You breathe out the carbon dioxide-rich air through your nose or mouth.
The respiratory system is essential for life. Without it, we would not be able to get the oxygen we need to survive.
