How to Breed Caique Birds

Caique birds are medium-sized parrots, originally from South America. These parrots grow to about 9 inches long, and display brightly colored plumage in shades of orange, yellow, green, white and black. Caique birds do well in captivity, as they are very adaptable. However, these birds are extremely intelligent, and can display strong personalities. This means these birds need a lot of training so they don't dominate their owners. This also makes breeding a challenge, as caique birds can become aggressive if they're paired with a mate they don't like. Patience is require for successful breeding.

Instructions

Find a mated pair of birds. Because these birds are very picky, this can be difficult. Caique parrots often reject partners their owners have chosen for them. However, there are a few methods that work. You can purchase a mature breeding pair, a pair that's 2 years of age or older, from a reputable caique breeder. You can also raise a large group of caique birds yourself, and allow them to pair together naturally. Never try to force a pair to breed, as this can result in aggression.

    • 2

Place the pair of birds in a breeding aviary by themselves, away from other birds. These birds are small, so the aviary does not have to be large. An aviary 2-feet long, 2-feet tall, and 4-feet wide should be large enough.

    • 3

Place a nest box in a secluded corner of the breeding aviary. This nest box should be large enough for both of the birds to climb in. Fill the bottom of the box with soft wood shavings, which the female bird will use to create a nest.

    • 4

Give the caique birds vitamin and calcium supplements. These can be given as a supplement in the food or water, or a cuttlebone or mineral block can be placed in the aviary. This will ensure that the caique parrots receive the nutrients they need in order to produce and raise healthy offspring.

Let the birds settle in. Try to leave the birds alone as much as possible, so as not to interrupt them. Wait for them to breed. This can sometimes take a long time, as caique birds require time to settle in and become comfortable, and only breed when they feel like it. Patience is the best tool for breeding these birds. When they do breed, between two and four eggs will be laid, and these eggs will hatch in about 27 days.
