How to Splint a Bird's Foot

Pet birds spend most of their days inside cages resting on their feet. These conditions make the birds susceptible to foot injuries. Keeping a first aid kit handy for your bird will greatly increase the chances of recovery from these common foot injuries. Providing first aid for your bird at home may be the quickest method of treatment, but it is always a good idea to get your bird to an avian vet for professional care.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of tape sized to fit the bird's leg. Make sure the tape is large enough to fit the leg above and below the fracture, as you will cut off the excess after splinting.

    • 2

Hold the bird securely, and place one piece of the tape under the injured leg. Make sure the leg is in the correct healing position, flexed at the patella, not straight.

    • 3

Cover the other side of the leg with the remaining tape and press the sides together securely, but not tightly enough to put pressure on the leg.

    • 4

Staple the tape on both sides, roughly 1/4 inch from the leg itself. Trim off the extra tape around the edges.

    • 5

Check to see if the foot is clenched. If it is, place a cotton ball under the toes to stretch them out and tape into place.

    • 6

Check the bird foot regularly for warmth. If the foot feels cold, you will need to adjust the splint for tightness.
