How to Board a Quaker Parrot

Popular among avian enthusiasts as pets, Quaker parrots are small, long-lived parrots with distinctive gray and green feathers, intelligent and inquisitive personalities, and highly sensitive dispositions. Owners going on vacation or leaving town need to take the needs of their Quaker parrots into consideration when determining where to board them. Boarders should be familiar with the quirks of Quaker parrots, including their need for vocalization, the fact that they can confront other birds without fear and that they are the only parrots to build nests.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for boarding facilities that specialize in birds. General boarding facilities may place your bird within hearing distance of dogs and cats, which can stress out your parrot.

    • 2

Ask the boarding facility if they have experience with Quaker parrots. If not, ask them if they would feel comfortable researching the bird before you make a reservation.

    • 3

Contact a potential boarding facility at least two weeks before your travel dates to make your reservation.

    • 4

Ask what is included with boarding. Most facilities include cage water, seed, food and water, basic care and supervised out-of-cage time. Find out the policies for contacting a veterinarian; if they provide fresh snacks, cage covers or night lights; and if you can bring your bird's perches and toys.

    • 5

Pay your deposit -- most boarding facilities require a prepayment of at least 25 percent of your boarding fee.

    • 6

Determine if you need to get vaccinations for or a certificate for your Quaker parrot from your veterinarian before boarding. Most reputable boarding facilities require psitticosis testing and proof of a current polyoma virus vaccine.

    • 7

Make a list of your bird's favorite words, songs and games to bring along so that care takers can make your Quaker parrot feel more at home while you are gone.

    • 8

Bring your Quaker parrot to the boarding facility, with the required or desired extras, in a bird-safe pet carrier.
