How to Cure Chicken Mites

One annoyance of keeping chickens is dealing with their mites. These tiny parasites feed off the chicken's blood and live in their feathers. Although it's common to have a few chicken mites, a heavy infestation can sicken your chickens, reducing egg production and resulting in death. Before you try to treat your chickens, make sure that mites are the culprits. Chickens can also attract lice, which are treated differently than mites.

Instructions

    • 1

Ascertain that it is mites infesting your chickens. Mites are smaller than lice and look like black to red specks. Mites have round bodies that are not segmented. Mites typically feed on the chickens at night and then jump off and hide during the day.

Pick the appropriate form of insecticide to treat the mites. Use dusts and sprays for a small number of chickens. Part the feathers and apply the dust or spray directly so that the pesticide can reach the skin.

    • 3

Use a liquid pesticide spray if treating numerous chickens for mites. Spray the chickens in their cages with enough force that it penetrates the feathers and get onto the skin. Spray from above and below too.

    • 4

Use a liquid spray pesticide to treat where the chickens live. Spray litter and bedding. Spray the building where they are housed, getting it in the crevices and holes in the wall.

Use pesticide resin strips for ongoing protection. Place near food and water and near roosting sites.
