How to Get My Parakeet to Drink Water

The name Parakeet refers to a large variety of bird species, many of whom are not actually even related to one another. All parakeets, however, are from the parrot species, and tend to be small- or medium-sized. Many of the parakeets sold in the United States as pets are Budgerigars, or Budgies. Parakeets can become apprehensive when placed in new surrounding, or when their diet is changed. If you think your bird is not drinking enough water, there are a few things you can do to encourage it. Parakeets typically consume about 3 ml of water per day.

One reason your parakeet may not be drinking is that the water is dirty and has an offending smell. The parakeet may even be bathing in the water as well, which could make it dirty. The water should be changed at least once per day.

Stop putting liquid vitamins in the water. If you have purchased liquid vitamin drops for your parakeet, stop adding these and see if the parakeet drinks more. The taste and smell of the vitamins could be offputting to the parakeet.

The bird may not be used to drinking from a bottle. Place a dish of water next to the bottle so that it has something to drink while it gets accustomed to the bottle.
