How to Know If Your Bird Has Fleas

Fleas are nasty pests that feed on the blood of your pets. While most people associate flea problems with furry animals like cats and dogs, the truth is that fleas can infect a wide range of animals, including birds. Determining whether your bird has fleas can be done through a quick physical exam. Bird fleas are usually found in the nest, so an inspection of the habitat will also be required.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare your room for a bird exam. If your bird is a known escape artist, close all windows and doors and have a friend help you to restrain him.

    • 2

Remove the bird from his cage and gently inspect his back, stomach, and wings for fleas. You will need to separate his feathers with your index finger to get a good look at the flesh underneath.

    • 3

Place your bird in a safe place, such as a small travel cage or kennel.

    • 4

Remove the paper lining from the birdcage and inspect his nest, food, and any other items for the presence of fleas. Bird fleas will primarily be found in the nest.
