Baby birds sometimes tumble out of nests or are pushed out by their siblings. If you find a baby bird on the ground, if it doesn't have feathers or is covered with down, it's best to return the bird to the nest, and allow the parents to continue caring for it. The idea that the parents will reject the baby due to human scent is an old wives' tale. Most birds do not have a good sense of smell, and cannot tell if the baby has been handled.
