How to Kill Germs in a Broiler Chicken House

If you keep chickens you will know that they are not naturally hygienic animals, and because they live in close proximity to one another in often cramped conditions, bacteria and germs can quickly spread. Cleaning your chicken house is therefore an essential job. Bacteria, rodents and other nasties will flourish if you neglect your responsibilities. This filth will lead to unhealthy chickens and unsafe eggs. Make sure you perform a deep clean of your chicken house every three months to maintain healthy and happy chickens.

Instructions

    • 1

Let all your chickens into the chicken run then remove all existing litter, hay, straw and bedding from the house. Open all doors so that it is well-ventilated.

    • 2

Brush away all manure and droppings. Some may be stuck so brush hard and everywhere including nest boxes, floors and walls. Put the droppings you collect onto the compost heap. Most disease and germs are transmitted through droppings so removing it will make the chicken house much more hygienic. Use a brush to dust away any cobwebs or dirt from the wire screens and the house roof.

    • 3

Spray your chicken house cleaning product inside the chicken house and wash with some warm water. Make sure every single piece of the chicken house is thoroughly cleaned. Allow to air-dry.

    • 4

Check the house for any sign of rodents or infestations. Treat as required.

    • 5

Sterilize chicken waterers by placing them in a bucket consisting of warm soapy water, liquid dish soap and mild bleach. Soak for 30 minutes. Perform this job once a month.
