How to Mate Parrots

When preparing to mate parrots, it's important to create a setting that mimics what the birds would find in nature. In the wild, parrots mate in the spring when there's an abundance of fresh food to eat and longer stretches of daylight to allow the birds enough time to forage for food. To create this scenario at home, breed your parrots in the springtime and provide plenty of fresh produce in their cage. Would-be breeders should be aware that once parrots mate, they prefer more time with each other and not with their human caretaker.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait to breed your parrots until spring, when the days are longer. Place the parrots' cage near a window where they can observe the change in daylight.

    • 2

Provide the birds with leafy greens, seeds and whatever else is a part of their approved diet. Check back throughout the day to make sure the food remains well-stocked.

    • 3

Purchase a nesting box from a pet-supply retailer. The type you need will vary depending upon the breed of parrot you have. Place the nesting box in the cage.

    • 4

Watch for the male parrot to inspect the nesting box.

    • 5

Observe if the male bird chews on the nesting box. If he does, he approves, and mating will occur within the next few days. If the male doesn't chew on the nesting box, remove it from the cage, and try again in a few days. The pair might not yet be ready for mating.
