Symptoms
-
The signs exhibited when an African grey parrot has contracted a bacterial sinus infection may include excessive yawning, shaking or rubbing its head, sneezing or nasal discharge. The bird may display one or more of these symptoms.
Treatment
-
The African grey parrot should be taken to an avian veterinarian who will run tests, diagnose the illness and treat the symptoms. Antibiotics or antifungal therapy may be given orally, by injection or by topical application. A hospital stay may or may not be required.
Preventing Sinus Infections
-
Improve the quality of the air by removing bird dander, cigarette smoke and dust by filtering the air with a HEPA filter system. Humidifying the air and providing a quality diet that is rich in vitamins is very important for preventing bacterial sinus infections. Flushing the nasal cavity with an antibiotic or antifungal solution may be necessary in parrots with recurrent infections.
