Instructions
Choose a cage that is large enough to give your African gray plenty of room. For a young bird, the cage needs to be at least 3 feet wide and 3 feet tall. The bars need to be close enough together to prevent the bird from putting his head through them. Provide plenty of perches that are the size of the bird's talons.
Keep water available at all times in a clean dish. Remove the dish each day and wash with warm water and dish soap. Rinse thoroughly before refilling with fresh water.
Feed daily with a pellet blend that is specifically made for parrots. Feed small amounts of vegetables and fruits each day. Be sure to wash and peel the fruit and cut it into small chunks. Offer a different variety of fresh produce each day. Choose foods that are high in vitamin A such as papaya, sweet potatoes and acorn squash.
Change the papers in the bottom of the cage and wipe down perches daily in addition to cleaning food bowls. African grays are very messy and require frequent cleaning.
Bathe your bird at least once a week with lukewarm water either in a clean kitchen sink or with a spray bottle. Do not use soaps or shampoos, just allow them to fluff their feathers under water.
Spend plenty of time with your bird. Take it out of its cage frequently and allow it to perch near you. Throw toys across the floor and allow it to chase them for exercise.
