Things You'll Need
- Clean water
- Fresh food
- Fresh newspaper
- Clean cage
Instructions
Change food and water dishes daily. Parakeets should be eating fresh seeds and fruits every day and should have clean water to drink. The seeds can be bought at any pet store.
Clean the cage daily. Parakeets can become very ill when the cage is left dirty. Instead of allowing the cage to get dirty, it should be cleaned each day. Fresh paper should be placed in the bottom for ease of cleaning. The birds can be taken out of the cage and allowed to move around the room while it is being cleaned. Parakeets are social and if their wings are clipped, they won't fly away.
Always remove uneaten fruit within a few hours. Cut fruit can go bad quickly. Many problems are avoided by ensuring that a pet parakeet doesn't eat fruit that's been in the cage too long.
Take the bird to a vet that specializes in bird health at least once a year. This will help keep the parakeet healthy and happy.
Watch for odd behaviors. Behaviors like sitting on the bottom of the cage, tucking its head under a wing, stopping food intake or ruffled feathers can be signs of an illness. Owners should always pay attention to breathing and discharge, as these are signs of a respiratory problem.
Take the parakeet to a vet immediately if signs of illness can be seen. The longer the parakeet suffers, the less likely the parakeet will recover from illness. Early detection can keep the parakeet alive and healthy.
