How to Dispose of a Deceased Bird

Just like humans, birds don't live forever. You may come across a dead bird on your property a time or two. When this happens, it is important that you dispose of the deceased bird properly. Dead birds are known for being infested with diseases and parasites that are potentially harmful to humans and their family pets. In addition, there are procedures you must follow when you find multiple diseased birds in one area.

Instructions

    • 1

Count the number of dead birds on your property. If you have more than five deceased birds, you must call either your state veterinarian, local cooperative extension office or the United States Department of Agriculture. They will remove the dead birds and perform tests to determine if the deaths were related to such communicable diseases as the West Nile virus or the avian flu.

    • 2

Put on a pair of plastic gloves if you only have one or two dead birds to dispose of.

    • 3

Pick up the dead bird and place it in a plastic zipper bag. Seal the zipper.

    • 4

Set the plastic zipper bag inside a plastic grocery bag. Remove your plastic gloves and toss them in the plastic grocery bag as well. Tie shut.

    • 5

Toss the bag with the dead bird inside it into an outdoor trash can and take it to the curb on trash day.

    • 6

Wash your hands with soap and warm water immediately after disposing of the dead bird.
