Pet Bird Information

Many people enjoy keeping birds for pets. These pets can be entertaining, loving and fun. Birds often chirp and make noises, so keep this in mind if you live with other people. Pet birds are easy to take care of, but they require plenty of attention.
  1. Feeding

    • The most common cause of premature death in birds is seed-only diets. You should feed fruits and vegetables to your bird in addition to seeds. Provide fresh water daily.

    Sunlight

    • Pet birds need vitamin D to ensure their bone health. To do this, place your bird's cage near a window. Windows block UVA and UVB rays, so you will need to occasionally open the window for the your bird to get the benefits of these rays.

    Grooming

    • Pet birds need opportunities to bathe themselves. Some pet owners place a small dish of water in their bird's cage. Some birds enjoy bathing in the bathroom sink.

    Weather

    • In the wild, birds huddle together to keep themselves warm. Provide a warm room for your bird to live in, but not a hot room. Place some soft fabric in the cage for them to snuggle into if you live in a cooler home.

    Perches

    • Birds enjoy singing and standing on perches. Pet stores carry these, or you can use a small tree branch.

    Social Interaction

    • Birds are naturally very social animals. If your bird lives alone, you should give it plenty of attention and let it out to roam and play. If you will not be able to provide attention for your bird, purchase a companion for it; otherwise it may become depressed.
