What Is Rescue Remedy?
-
Rescue Remedy is one of a series of remedies created by Dr. Edward Bach after years of working as a traditional doctor in London to address medical needs such as relieving stress, according to the Dr. Edward Bach Centre in Mount Vernon, Oxfordshire, England. Bach felt he could use homeopathic medicines to treat the symptoms ill people experienced instead of just focusing on treating the disease itself. Although Bach died more than 70 years ago, the remedies he created are still produced at the Bach Centre. Two Bach Centre members, Stefan Ball and Judy Ramsell Howard, wrote a book for pet owners called "Bach Flower Remedies for Animals." Rescue Remedy in particular is sometimes recommended for pets. Its mix of natural ingredients---including such plants as cherry plum and rock rose---is designed to encourage relaxation and relieve stress.

When caring for your pet bird, it's important to ensure the bird remains relatively stress-free by providing him a clean cage and relaxing environment. Stress can greatly affect birds; in some cases, birds can develop behavioral problems and neuroses as a result of stress, according to Winged Wisdom magazine, an online publication for domesticated-bird owners. You can calm a stressed bird using several different methods. A little attention and frequent handling helps calm birds, according to Linda Mark, information specialist at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in Urbana, Illinois.
Holistic anti-anxiety medications like Rescue Remedy can help relax birds and other pets that are anxious due to stormy weather or other stressful circumstances. According to Nelsons Natural World, which has run the Bach Centre's bottling and distribution business since 1991, adding a few drops of Rescue Remedy to your bird's water bowl or food is the best way to administer the tonic to a stressed bird. However, Nelsons recommends consulting your veterinarian before giving Rescue Remedy or another new substance to your pet.
