Geography
-
Toucans are native to the countries of Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. They can be found in every country in South America except for Chile. It is said that some toucans have been found in parts of Southern Mexico. The toucan resides in rain forests in higher elevations and tends to stay high up in the trees, nesting in small holes.
Considerations
-
Try to resist the temptation to trim the wings of a toucan because they enjoy flying and playing. The beak of a toucan is not that strong so it is not able to climb like other birds can, which limits its mobility in a way. For the comfort of the toucan, as well as other birds, keep the toucan separate from different species of birds. Toucans are generally friendly enough, but it is best to let them have their own area to live and play.
Features
-
A toucan shelter should have natural lighting, good ventilation, plenty of perching areas, and a solid ground that is easy to clean. An outdoor shelter will work best to capture natural light and to ensure fresh air for the toucan. Toucans can live indoors, however indoor living will likely hinder breeding. Toucans tend to perch most of the time, therefore any droppings will land on the ground below. A solid ground, preferably metal or concrete, with adequate drainage is necessary as the ground will need to be sprayed down frequently. The cage should be made of wire, preferably wire mesh. Glass or plastic shelters are not recommended and could be dangerous to the toucan as well.
Size
-
The minimum size of a cage for a toucan should be similar to what would be used for a cockatoo. It is best to use a larger cage though and provide the toucan with room to move and explore. If you will be using an aviary the dimensions should be a minimum size of 8 feet across, 8 feet wide and 12 feet in height. One portion of the shelter should be covered by a roof which will serve as a shield from the elements.
Warning
-
The shelter of a toucan needs to be cleaned frequently to prevent bacteria from growing and infecting the bird. Keep the toucan out of extreme weather conditions, such as freezing temperatures below 20 degrees F, and cold wind and rain. If the bird is kept outside in cold conditions a heat source should be provided, such as a heater and a nest. Be sure that the water being served to the toucan is done so in a metal dish that is frequently cleaned and kept out from under the perches.

What Kind of Shelter Does a Toucan Need?
The toucan is a very smart and friendly bird, and can make a great pet. Toucans can live up to twenty years, and are generally low maintenance birds, requiring a simple diet and basic care. This type of bird is from the tropical forest of Latin America, and enjoys exploring it's surroundings and perching in trees. Proper shelter is one of the most important aspects of keeping a toucan as pet, and should be done with great care.
