1. In an open area with scattered trees or shrubs. Bluebirds prefer open areas with grassy meadows or lawns. They often perch on trees, fence posts, or power lines, so make sure the box is in a location where they'll be able to easily see it.
2. At least 5 feet high. Bluebirds like to nest high off the ground, so place the box at least 5 feet high. This will help to protect the nest from predators, such as cats, dogs, and snakes.
3. Facing the southeast. Bluebirds prefer boxes that face the southeast. This helps to protect the nest from the prevailing winds and rain.
4. At least 100 feet away from other bluebird boxes. Bluebirds are territorial, so they don't like to have other bluebird boxes too close to their own.
5. In a location that is free from noise and human activity. Bluebirds prefer to nest in quiet areas, so try to avoid placing the box in a location that is near a lot of noise or human activity.
Additional tips for putting up a bluebird box:
- Choose a box that is made of durable material, such as wood or metal.
- Make sure the box is well-ventilated and has a drainage hole in the bottom.
- Place a 1-2 inch layer of pine needles or wood shavings in the bottom of the box to help absorb moisture.
- Monitor the box regularly and remove any old nests or debris.
- Clean the box inside and outside each spring before bluebirds begin nesting.
