Pigeon Loft Ideas

Pigeon lofts are shed-like structures where you can comfortably house your pigeons and protect them from the elements. These lofts come in all different shapes and sizes. They should be custom-made to fit your needs. Make sure there is enough room for all your pigeons to live comfortably. If you do not have room to build a loft wide enough, then build it higher to accommodate all of your birds. Pigeon lofts need to let lots of air inside, so the pigeons will not feel restricted and have room to fly around.

  1. Dryness

    • Since the lofts will stay closed most of the time, make sure that the materials you use will ensure the lofts stay dry, because it will be hard to dry them out otherwise. It will not be good for the birds if they get wet during storms, as they could get sick.

    Storms

    • Your loft will have openings in it, so when planning where to put the openings, take into consideration the typical storm patterns in your area. For example, if storms tend to come from the north, then put the openings for landings on the south side. The main objective is to make sure as little rain and snow get into the loft as possible.

    Storage

    • Put storage somewhere in your pigeon loft. This is where you can put all of your supplies for maintaining the loft and caring for your birds. By having a storage unit in your loft, you will not have to haul supplies around because they will all be easily accessible for you.

    Landings

    • Build landings that are big enough for multiple birds to perch on. Cover these landings with screens, so sunlight and fresh air can get in. Consider making them large enough so that food and water can be put on the ledge. This will keep it off the ground so you and the pigeons will not walk on them and potentially knock them over.

    Doors

    • Use doors that will insulate, but also keep the loft dry, like sliding glass doors. This will let even more light in, so the pigeons are not living in a dark area. It will create a more natural feeling in the loft than using solid doors. The sliding doors will make sure no rain or snow gets in. If you install the sliding glass doors, you can also put screen doors behind it, so air can flow through on nice days.
