How to Feed a Ringneck Parakeet

The ringneck is one of the many species of parakeets. These elegant birds are intelligent, social, and are often kept as pets. The typical adult ringneck can grow up to 16 inches in length. In order to remain tame, the ringneck has to have regular contact with humans. Since ringnecks are not picky eaters, they can be fed a wide variety of nutritious vegetables, fruits, seeds and pellets. Feeding your ringneck can be an enjoyable experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed your ringneck parakeet fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Some suitable types include parsley, spinach, carrots, greens, oranges, kiwis, pears, mangoes, melons and apples. You should also supplement their diet with pellets or seeds.

    • 2

Supply your ringneck parakeet with specialized pellets. This should consist of at least 70% of their diet. Leave a cuttlebone (the skeleton of the cuttlefish) in your parakeet's cage to supply it with adequate calcium and minerals, as well keep its beak trimmed. Birds normally gnaw on the cuttlebone, which will naturally trim their beak down over a period of time.

Discard any leftover feed not eaten within 24 hours. It is recommended that you give your ringneck parakeets fresh feed each day.

Give your parakeet fresh, clean water daily, making sure it is free from chlorine.
