How to Feed a Parakeet Bread

Feeding is one of the most essential functions in pet ownership. Birds, such as parakeets, can be fed an assortment of food items as long as primary nutritional requirements are being met with daily diet. Including treats and snacks such as bread to your parakeet's diet should be done with caution and moderation in mind.

Instructions

Make sure your parakeet is in good health. Have the bird examined regularly by an approved and registered veterinarian who specializes in avian health. Verify that the parakeet is of the proper weight for its size and continue feeding the regular food best suited for your bird.

    • 2

Set up a treat and snack schedule for your parakeet. Make sure that everyone in charge of caring for the parakeet is aware of the snack schedule. Know that feeding snacks, such as bread, should only be done on occasion and not be used as a substitute for nutritionally inclusive bird food. Limit snacks for your parakeet to two to three times per week to help maintain a healthy diet and weight for your bird.

    • 3

Purchase bread that is made with whole grains. Do not use bread that is white or refined for feeding your parakeet. Wash and dry your hands. Break a piece of bread off and reserve the rest. Freeze the bread if you purchased it especially for the bird to enjoy. Use your pointer and index finger to pinch a pea-size piece of bread off. Roll the bread into a ball between your fingers.

    • 4

Hold the bread between your thumb and pointer finger. Offer the bread to your parakeet. Hold the bread directly in front of the bird's face and beak. Allow the bird to decide whether or not he is going to eat the bread. Do not thrust the bread at the bird and do not make sudden movements to scare the bird.

    • 5

Allow the bird to take small bites or nibble the bread. Do not leave the leftovers in the cage after the bird is done snacking. Continue feeding the bird regular bird food as usual.
