How to Feed Quail in Arizona

Watching quail on your property can bring enjoyment to your day. Some people also may choose to hunt the quail they have attracted. In Arizona, attracting quail by feeding them is easy. Gambel's quail, by far the most common variety of quail in Arizona, are beautiful birds that will congregate around the sources of food you provide. The variety in their mostly vegetarian diet makes these birds easy to please when it comes to feeding them.

Instructions

    • 1

Find or create a naturally landscaped area on your property that features native Sonoran desert plants or find a nearby wash. Make sure quail have adequate plant cover from predators.

    • 2

Acquire game bird food from your local pet store.

    • 3

Crumble larger food pellets until they are of the size that will fit in a quail's beak easily, about the size of a corn kernel, for example.

    • 4

Place food in a low feeder that quail can reach from the ground, or sprinkle food on the ground in the same place daily.

    • 5

Store extra food in a cool, dry location where rodents cannot get to it.
