How to Hand-Feed Budgie Chicks

Budgerigars are a type of bird also known as budgies. They are one of the most popular caged birds and the most common of all Australian parrots. Budgie females can lay eggs while newer eggs are still hatching. Therefore, a large amount of chicks need to be fed in a short amount of time. Hand-feeding these birds is a simple and fun task as they are tame and easy to handle, even for the newest of bird handlers.

Place the mixture in a cup. Squeeze a pea-sized amount between your thumb and index finger.

Pick up the budgie chick and cup it in the palm of your hand. Support the budgie chick's neck with your index and middle fingers.

    • 4

Place the budgie food a half-inch above its beak. Let the chick pick at the food. Allow the budgie to eat until it lies on its stomach.

Wipe the excess food off its beak and body with a cotton swab. Wipe the food off in the opposite direction of its beak and eyes to avoid injury.
