How to Feed a Parrot Peas

Feeding your parrot a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is the best way to ensure your bird lives a long and joyful life. Birds fed a diet rich in fruits and vegetables live longer than birds that are fed a seed-only diet. According to Birds Come First, a nonprofit organization, some fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of herbicide and insecticides, and these chemicals are deadly to birds. Fruits and vegetables should be organic, washed, and cut into appropriate size. Birds enjoy cooked or raw peas, and can be fed a variety of peas daily.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase organic peas from a certified organic retailer. Many chain stores offer certified organic vegetables. Always research the manufacturer to ensure the peas are truly organic because fungicides and insecticides can kill your bird.

    • 2

Wash thoroughly, and chop your pea pods into a small manageable size. They should be just large enough to allow your parrot to hold them in there feet. You can also leave the peas in there pods or shell the pods. Another option is to skew the pea pods through their middle using a bird skewer, and then hang in the cage.

    • 3

Place cooked or raw peas in the bird dish, and place in the birds cage. Or if you've chosen to skew them onto a skewer you can hang the bird skewer near the food dish or where somewhere in the cage where the bird spends the most time perching.

    • 4

Leave the peas in the cage for no more than four hours. Remove them, and throw them away. Do not reuse peas that have been sitting in the cage, or your bird could become sick.
