How to Feed Ducks Stale Bread

Few activities are more exciting for children than a trip to feed ducks. Ducks and geese are migratory animals that congregate around bodies of water during their travels, and your local lake is the ideal spot for just such a feeding trip. Ducks are opportunistic feeders and will gladly accept handouts, such as the loaf of bread that's been on the back of the counter for a week.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the regulations in your area before feeding ducks. In some locations, it is against the law to feed any wild animals. Your state's fish and game department should have a list of guidelines available for feeding wildlife.

    • 2

Pack up your family and head to the lake. Make sure that everyone has on sturdy, safe shoes such as tennis shoes or hiking boots. Jackets are another useful item of clothing to bring along, as the wind blowing off the water drops the temperature of the air near the water.

    • 3

Open the bag of bread and hand a slice to each person in your group. Tear the bread into small chunks and toss it towards the water. As the ducks catch the scent of the bread, they will come out of the water and walk towards you to investigate.

    • 4

Crouch down and hold a large piece of bread in your hand and wait for the ducks to come close enough to eat from between your fingers. Some ducks may be reluctant to take the bread, but if you are quiet and hold still long enough, curiosity will win and they'll eat from the palm of your hand.

    • 5

Sanitize your hands after feeding with hand sanitizing gel or foam. Ducks can transmit germs and parasites during feeding, so proper sanitation is necessary for the safety of your family.
