How to Make Finch Egg Food

In addition to a seed or pellet diet, many finch enthusiasts supplement the bird's rations with fresh produce and egg food. Making fresh egg food -- rather than buying the powdered mix at a pet store -- ensures the finches receive top-quality egg, free of unnecessary fillers or preservatives. Feed your finches egg food once a week as a protein-rich nutritional supplement and to add variety to your pet's menu. Both adult male and female finches enjoy egg food, so there's no need to reserve this treat just for nesting females.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a pot half full with cold water. Place the pot on the stove top on medium-high heat.

    • 2

Lower two eggs into the water with the ladle. This quantity will feed two pairs of finches, one time.

    • 3

Boil the water and eggs for 12 minutes to eliminate any bacteria on the eggs.

    • 4

Strain the eggs over a sink. Place the eggs into a bowl of ice water to cool for 20 minutes.

    • 5

Remove the eggs from the water. Peel the eggs, place them in a bowl and mash the egg whites and yolks into a crumbly texture using a fork.

    • 6

Crush the egg shells with a food processor. Mix the shells into the egg whites and yolks.

    • 7

Serve the egg food in a shallow dish on the floor of the finch cage, in addition to the birds' regular rations.
