How to Convert Your Quaker to Pellets

Quakers are medium-sized green and gray parrots known for their talking ability and large vocabulary. They bond easily to humans, and are not difficult to train. PetEducation.com suggests feeding Quaker parrots a pellet diet instead of a seed mixture because Quakers are prone to fatty liver disease, a disease that causes large fat deposits to the liver; it is typically caused by a high-fat diet. Help prevent your Quaker from getting the disease by converting to a high-quality pellet diet.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix in 1 tsp. of quaker-sized bird pellets into the bird's regular food for the first three days.

    • 2

Replace 1 to 3 tsp. of the bird's regular food with the new pellet diet. Increase the amount of pellets every day for the next three days, so that by the third day the bird is getting 3 tsp. of pellets.

    • 3

Replace half of the old food with pellets by day seven. On day eight, replace the old food with the pellets entirely. If the quaker is not eating the new food at all, and you become concerned that it is not eating, place 1 tsp. of the old food in the bird's dish mixed in with the new food.

    • 4

Continue with Step 3 if your quaker is struggling with the conversion until your bird is eating only the new food. The idea is to limit the old food as much as possible to encourage the quaker to eat the new food. You want to cause the bird to become hungry enough that it will eat the new food.
