How to Make Concentrated Hummingbird Food

Hummingbirds feed on nectar from flowers, but they can be attracted to feeders with a simple mix of sugar and water. The basic mix is four parts water to one part sugar, but mixtures up to half and half can be made. You may wish to provide higher concentrations of sugar water when hummingbirds are migrating. These tiny birds have an astronomical need for calories to fuel their hovering method of flight. A hummingbird can consume up to two-thirds of its body weight in sugar water per day.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean your hummingbird feeder thoroughly, according to the manufacturer's instructions. You don't want the new batch of food to be contaminated by bacteria or mold.

    • 2

Mix one part granulated sugar with four parts water in a saucepan. To increase the concentration of sugar, simply use less water.

    • 3

Bring to a boil on a stovetop while stirring.

    • 4

Remove the saucepan from the heat when all the sugar has dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool.

    • 5

Fill your hummingbird feeder according to the manufacturer's instructions.
