Seeds
-
Budgie seed mix is readily available in pet shops. Avoid buying in bulk to ensure freshness. Store the seed mix in a clear plastic container to keep dry. Another optimal choice to preserve freshness is to freeze the mixture overnight. According to The Budgie and Parakeet Place website, freezing helps avoid seed moth problems.
Fresh Foods
-
Although fresh fruits and vegetables are an important part of a budgie's diet, they may not accept it willingly at first. Be persistent and offer a piece of fruit and vegetable every day and over time your budgie will eat it. You have a wide variety of choices from which to choose. For fruit, select from oranges, apples, kiwi, guava, strawberries and mango. For vegetables, choose from spinach, grated carrots, broccoli and sweet corn. Organic fruits and vegetables are always preferred, as they don't contain harmful pesticides.
Cuttlebone and Mineral Block
-
A cuttlebone is from the shell of a cuttle fish and provides jaw exercise and calcium for your budgie. The mineral block provides your budgie with needed minerals. These two objects can be placed in the cage and left alone. Your budgie will gnaw at them to get the exercise and nutrients needed.
Foods to Avoid
-
Never feed your budgie junk food, avocados, asparagus, cabbage and eggplant. In addition, alcohol, tea, coffee, milk and creams are also off limits. Budgies could become deathly ill if feed any of these foods or drinks.

Healthy Food for Budgies
Budgie birds are good birds for beginners. These birds have a lifespan of approximately 10 years but can live longer with proper care. However, the life of a budgie bird can be cut short if left to feed on only seeds. A healthy diet consisting of seeds, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables is vital to a budgie's longevity.
