Instructions

    • 1

Purchase black-oil sunflower seed from your local vet or pet supply store, as black-oil sunflower seed attracts many different kinds of birds who enjoy the comparatively large amount of meat this seed provides. As a general rule when purchasing sunflower and other seeds, consider that if it's good enough for you to eat, it's good enough for a bird to eat.

Purchase suet from your local butcher or deli counter at your local grocery store. Understand that suet is beef kidney fat and that it attracts birds such as bushtits, which eat insects.

    • 3

Purchase hummingbird feeders from your local grocery or craft store and fill them with a mixture of sugar water. Mix one part granulated sugar into four parts of boiling water. Allow the mixture to cool and then pour it into the feeders. Hang these feeders from trees to attract hummingbirds. Change the mixture in the feeders every three to five days to prevent the buildup of mold, which can harm hummingbirds.

Scatter peanuts around your property or crush them up and place them in feeders to attract blue jays, nuthatches and woodpeckers, all of which are attracted to peanuts. You may also try plain, air-popped popcorn, pieces of fruit such as oranges, and melon seeds, which also attract these birds.
