How to Feed Green Cheek Conures

Green cheek conures are small, social birds that often do well in family environments. These conures are playful and intelligent, and they also form strong bonds with their owners. Some conures learn to talk, although they are not known for their speaking abilities. In the wild, conures eat seeds, fruit and other plant materials. The captive diet should follow as closely to the wild diet as possible, with lots of variety, including healthy vegetables, grains and proteins.

Instructions

    • 1
Bird seed is OK as a supplement, but it is not a complete diet.

Place fresh pellets into your bird's feeding dish or tray. If your bird is used to a seed diet, introduce pellets gradually. Seed diets are high in fat and lack the nutritional benefits of pellets. Seed is an acceptable part of a diet, though, and sprouted seeds are particularly healthy. According to the Green Cheek Conure Home Page, pellets should make up 50 to 80 percent of your conure's diet.

    • 2
Give cooked or small, bite-size vegetables to your conure.

Give your conure vegetables daily. You can also give it legumes and fruits, although fruits are high in sugar and are better as a special treat. Stick to vegetables that are dark orange or green in color; these hold the most vitamins and nutrients.

    • 3

Replace all vegetables and fruits daily by removing uneaten portions after 24 hours and replacing with fresh vegetables or fruits.

    • 4

Cook white meat or tofu to give to your conure. These provide valuable sources of protein to your conure.

    • 5
Beans and rice are good treats for your bird.

Feed your conure breads, cooked rice or pasta. You can also give your bird nuts every now and then.
