How to Mix Bird Seeds for Pets

Making your own bird seed at home is a great way to make unique food specific to your pet bird. There is a large variety of seeds you can mix together for a bird food mix, most of which can be found at your local pet store. For pet birds, it's helpful to mix together bird seed that can be molded into a shape, rather than just loose, so that you can suspend the seed in your bird's cage.

  • Black sunflower seeds
  • Thistle seeds
  • Crushed nuts
  • Cornmeal
  • White millet
  • Flour
  • Edible glue syrup
  • Wax paper

Instructions

      Mix together 3/4 cup of flour, 1/2 cup of water, and 3 tbsp. of edible glue syrup in a bowl.

      Mix in equal parts of black sunflower seeds, thistle seeds, crushed nuts, cornmeal, and white millet. Include any other types of food your bird prefers, such as dried fruits.

      Mold the seed mixture into balls, and place them on wax paper.

      Press a small piece of string into the balls so that you'll be able to suspend them in your bird's cage after they have dried.

      Allow the seed to set and the edible glue to dry for five hours before setting it up in your bird's cage.
