How to Feed Macaws

According to National Geographic, there are more than 17 different varieties of macaws, all of which originate from the rain forests of South America. Macaws can be kept as pets and are prized by many owners for their lively attitude and intelligence. In order to keep a macaw healthy and happy, it should be fed a scheduled diet. Any deviation in the macaw's feeding habit could upset the bird and lead to digestive issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed the macaw at least once a day. This feeding should be scheduled; macaws flourish when they have a predictable dinner time.

    • 2

Give the macaw a mixture of nuts, especially palm nuts, and pellets that are specially formulated for this type of bird. The macaw can be fed anywhere from 1/2 cup to 2 cups of this mixture per day, depending upon the bird's size. Place the food in a heavy, stainless steel bowl that can be mounted on the side of the macaw's cage. This will make it more difficult for the bird to play with its food.

    • 3

Supplement the macaw's daily diet with 1/2 cup fruits or vegetables. They should be washed and cut before given to the macaw. Fruits that can be offered include strawberries, bananas, oranges, pears and plums. Avoid giving the bird avocado, as this can be potentially toxic to birds. Vegetables can include celery, corn, carrots and spinach.

    • 4

Offer the macaw treats during the day, such as two to three walnuts, almonds or macadamia nuts.

    • 5

Provide the macaw with a source of fresh water throughout the day. This can come in the form of an automatic waterer or a bowl that is refreshed at least once a day.
