Food for African Grey Parrots

African grey parrots require a varied diet to maintain optimal health. They are sometimes prone to low blood calcium levels, and all have individual dietary needs that can best be identified by a qualified veterinarian.
  1. Seeds

    • There are many commercially available seed mixes for parrots. Look for mixes that contain a variety of seeds and are low in sunflower seed content. Sunflower seeds are high in fat and can lead to obesity in African grey parrots.

    Pellets

    • A high-quality pellet mix can be more nutritious than seeds. Pellet mixes are low in fat and contain more nutrients and vitamins. Pellet mixes are most effective when mixed with fresh fruits and vegetables.

    Fruits and Vegetables

    • A diet including fruits and vegetables provides the most nutrition for parrots. While parrots enjoy nearly every type of fruit and vegetable, large beans such as black, lima, fava, kidney, pinto, navy, and soy should not be fed raw. These beans can cause digestive upset unless cooked. Providing a variety over time will keep your parrot from getting bored or from developing food phobias.

    Sprouts

    • Sprouted seeds may be more accepted by parrots that prefer seeds to fruits and vegetables. Sprouted seeds provide more nutrition than other seed mixes and provide valuable energy during molting and breeding.

    Flax Seeds

    • Sprinkling whole flax seeds on your parrot's food can help restore the balance of omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids. Flax seeds are the best source for lignan, a phytochemical that has antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anticancer properties.
