Homemade Bird Seed

Making home-made bird seed can save money and be fun. You can use it to feed your pet birds or to feed the wild bird from your hanging yard feeder. Many household food items can be used to make your own bird seed. There are many variations of bird seed recipes that can be made by adding or swapping ingredients from a single bird seed recipe.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 1/2 oatmeal
  • 2 cups chopped nuts
  • 1/2 cup squash seeds
  • 1/2 cup dried watermelon seeds
  • Peanut butter (optional)
  • Corn cob or pine cone

      Combine all of the ingredients. Pour them into a food processor or coffee bean grinder.

      Process the ingredients together for a few seconds to form a fine texture, yet avoid grinding into too fine of a powder.

      Pour the bird feed in an air-tight container to store and use as needed. The bird feed should stay fresh for several months if stored properly.

      Add the seed to your feeder, or make a homemade bird feeder for your pet or yard birds. You can use a dried corn cob or pine cone. Roll the cob or pine cone in peanut butter. Hang from a tree or dangle in the cage.
