How to Make a Glass Bottle Bird Feeder

Birdwatching is a relaxing hobby. Birds are easily enticed to a home that offers birdseed. You can transform a glass bottle into a homemade bird feeder with little effort. The feeder is self-filling and requires little maintenance. Once you make the feeder and set it out, you will enjoy watching birds come to your porch or patio and eat.

Instructions

    • 1

Nail the 1-inch by 4-inch by 6-inch piece of wood to the bottom of the 1-inch by 6-inch by 12-inch piece of wood so that it creates a right angle.

    • 2

Hold a large glass bottle upside down against the larger piece of wood. The opening of the bottle should point toward the smaller board that juts out. Make sure the bottle is 3 cm above the smaller board, and mark two holes around the base of the bottle and two holes around the opening of the bottle.

    • 3

Drill small holes on the marks in the wood.

    • 4

Thread two pieces of wire through the openings in the wood. Wrap the wire around the bottle, and stick the ends out of the back of the wood. This holds the bottle securely against the wood.

    • 5

Bend or staple the wire so it doesn't fall out of the board's holes. The wire should be tight enough to hold the bottle in but loose enough that the bottle can be slid in and out of the wire loops.

    • 6

Hammer a nail into a wall outside where you want to hang the bird feeder. Be sure the nail sticks out far enough to catch the feeder.

    • 7

Screw the hook into the top of the bird feeder so that it sticks up from the top of the bird feeder. Hook the bird feeder onto the nail.

    • 8

Place a small shallow dish on the smaller piece of wood that sticks out from the feeder.

    • 9

Fill the glass bottle with birdseed. Put the cap on the bottle.

    • 10

Flip the bottle upside down and slide it through the wire loops. Take the bottle cap off. As the bottle releases the birdseed, the seed should fall into the shallow bowl.
