Zebra Finch Diet

The zebra finch is a popular domesticated bird. They are native to parts of Australia and Tasmania. Zebra finches are small birds, growing to about four inches in length. Zebra finches have gray wings, a white underbelly and distinctive black stripes on their neck and tail. This is where they get their name. There are several foods to feed a zebra finch in order to keep its diet balanced and nutritious.
  1. Birdseed

    • Birdseed should make up the majority of the zebra finch's diet.

The majority of a domesticated zebra finch's diet should be birdseed. A mixture specially made for small birds such as canaries is a good choice. Cereal seeds can also be added to the birdseed mix.

    Millet Seed

    • Like other domesticated birds, zebra finches do well with a mixture of millet seeds. Millet seed is a type of grass seed that is low in fat, unlike other varieties of bird seed, and provides domesticated birds with protein, calcium, B vitamins, carbohydrates and phosphorus as well as other important vitamins and minerals.

    Vegetables

    • Zebra finches can be fed fresh vegetables such as spinach.

As a supplement to their birdseed, zebra finches can be fed fresh vegetables such as carrot tops, lettuce, spinach, broccoli tops and alfalfa sprouts. These vegetables contain nutrients that are beneficial to zebra finches and help balance their diet.

    Eggs

    • Zebra finches will eat hard boiled eggs as well as egg shells.

Zebra finches will eat mashed hard-boiled eggs. They will also eat the egg shell as it is high in calcium. Be sure to wash the shells before feeding them to your finch.

    Gravel

    • Zebra finches need small pieces of gravel to mash up their food.

Zebra finches lack teeth and instead use grit or small pieces of gravel to mince their food before eating it. Because of this, it is important to provide zebra finches with a gravel mixture. There are commercial gravel mixes available with essential minerals added, such as charcoal.
