Homemade Wild Bird Feed

Placing food in a bird feeder in your backyard will attract many varieties of colorful birds. This is a wonderful way to observe the habits of different types of birds and may instill in your children a desire to become avid bird watchers. Homemade wild bird feed is very simple to make and is less expensive than the commercially prepared varieties. Soon your backyard will be filled with bird song and many interesting wild birds.

Things You'll Need

  • Large bowl or plastic bucket
  • Dried apples, raisins, prunes, melon or squash seeds
  • Nuts
  • Bird feeder (optional)

      Combine 2 cups each of dried chopped apples, raisins and any type of chopped nut you desire into a large bowl or plastic bucket. Using dried apples will prevent the mixture from molding as quickly.

      Add 1 cup each of dried, chopped prunes and dried chopped melon or squash seeds. Stir the mixture well.

      Add a small amount of the mixture to your bird feeder.

      Store the remaining wild bird feed in a brown paper bag. Place it in an area where it will remain cool and dry; this will keep it from spoiling as quickly.
