How to Feed Suet to Wild Birds

Suet attracts birds that love to eat insects. Simple to serve and mess-free, suet remains an economical way of feeding birds. Beef kidney fat makes the suet product. You can find it at grocery stores in the meat section or anywhere wild bird feed is sold. Birds like thrashers, buntings and sparrows come to suet feeders. Also, you'll find woodpeckers, cardinals and chickadees. In the summer months, suet tends to become rancid and melt; so it's best to purchase specially processed suet from a store.

Wild birds have babies to feed.

Choose where you want to locate your suet feeder. Think about the coming seasons and types of weather. Keeping suet out of the direct sunlight and in the shade is recommended. Also, put it in an area that provides quick access to safety for your feathered friends.

      Pigeons are considered wild birds.

Place the suet inside the suet feeder. If you prefer, you can also dip pine cones into melted beef fat with bird food in it. This provides multiple feeding stations for your wild birds. As a result, you'll have happier birds because they don't have to fight for their food. Instead, they have more places to eat. Use a heavy string on the end of the pine cone for hanging.

Birds will love you and come back for more.

Hang your feeder in your chosen locations and enjoy watching nature in your backyard. Wash your suet feeder with mild soap and water each time you change suet blocks. This will prevent the feeder from growing mold and bacteria. Also, keep the area under the feeder clean. Most likely, the birds will eat all the beef fat. But should any fall to the ground and be left forgotten, it could attract vermin.
