How to Make Birdhouses & Feeders From Two Liter Bottles

Birds are attractive and pleasant to have around your home. One way to attract them is to provide food and housing. Making a birdhouse or feeder from an empty two-liter soda bottle is a relatively simple task. Even children can do it, as long as they have adult supervision while cutting the bottle. Simply cut the bottle correctly, add perches and seed, and hang!

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse and dry the soda bottle. Remove the label to make sure the seed is visible. Screw the cap onto the soda bottle. Choose darker-colored bottles if you wish to make a birdhouse.

    • 2

Use a craft knife or drill to punch two holes about 1/4-inch from the bottom of the bottle, opposite one another.

    • 3

Thread a piece of string or wire around 20 inches long through the holes. This creates a hanger. Knot the ends of the string together, or twist the ends of the wire to create a loop. Turn the bottle cap-side-down for the rest of the work.

    • 4

Create the perches. Make two small holes in the bottle a few inches from the cap. These holes should be the same diameter as your dowels or branches, and located on opposite sides of the bottle. Make another set of holes a few inches closer to the bottom of the bottle, but rotated 90 degrees from the first set. Insert a dowel in each hole, so that you have two sets of horizontal perches.

    • 5

Drill or cut small holes about an inch above each of your perches. These holes should be large enough to let a few seeds out, but not so large that many seeds can come out at once.

    • 6

Remove the bottle cap and fill the feeder half-full of seed.

    • 7

Cut an entrance hole. If you wish to make a birdhouse instead of a feeder, skip steps 5 and 6. Instead, cut a hole above only one perch. Make sure that the hole is large enough for birds to enter through.

Suspend the bottle cap-side-down from a tree or post where birds like to roost. Eventually, it'll attract attention from your feathered friends.
