Directions for Homemade Bird Feeders

If you live in a nature-rich area, you may enjoy looking out your window at wildlife every day. One thing you may want to try is homemade bird feeders, which will attract these flying beauties right into your yard. Making your own bird feeder is easy to do and can make for some fun creative time for you and your family.
  1. Pine Cones

    • The simplest and most common way to make a homemade bird feeder is to use a pine cone and some peanut butter or honey. If you don̵7;t live in an area where pine cones are native, head to your local craft store to find some. Dip or roll your pine cone into the peanut butter or honey, then pour bird seeds over your pine cone so that there is a thick coat. Tie a string to the top of your pine cone and hang it anywhere outside your house.

    Plastic Bottles

    • Another a homemade bird feeder can be made by using a plastic milk jug or two-liter soda bottle. Start by cutting a few small holes into the plastic about three inches from the cap, and cutting off the bottom of the bottle in order to pour in seeds. Keeping the cap on, turn over the bottle and glue it to an aluminum pie container. Then fill your bottle with seeds. The seeds will fall out of the holes you̵7;ve cut and onto the pie container, which will also double as a perch, allowing birds a place to stand and eat.

    String Some Decor

    • If you̵7;ve got dried fruit, fruit that's about to go bad or old bread, you can use this to make a bird feeder instead of throwing it out. Simply take any of these foods and string them on a long piece of string, hang them from a branch, or across a few branches and birds will come. For decoration, you can even add some bird-safe products like pine cones or even Christmas ornaments. Remember to use objects that birds won̵7;t try to eat, or that won̵7;t harm birds; avoid stringing any décor that has glitter or small parts that can fall off and be eaten.
