How to Make Finch Food

Finches are small birds that live between four and seven years. They are popular pets and do well in caged environments. Although they are quiet birds, they are also quite active and will entertain their owners by flitting around their cages and playing with their toys. Although birdseed can be purchased at pet supply stores, it should only comprise 20 percent of the finch's daily food supply. The rest of the finch's food must be made at home.

Instructions

    • 1

Dice up a variety of vegetables into tiny squares and place them in a shallow feeding bowl inside the finch cage. According to the Finch Information Center, the following vegetables are safe for finches to eat: broccoli stems, brussels sprouts, cooked peas, turnip greens, romaine lettuce, beets, yams, pumpkins, dandelions, celery leaves, parsley and endive.

    • 2

Mix any of the following chopped fruit into the vegetable mixture: apricots, citrus fruits and bananas. You can also place a small bowl of applesauce into the finch cage to see if the bird will eat it.

    • 3

Feed the bird sources of protein, which can be found in the following products: canned tuna, grated cheese and dry cat or dog food. This is especially important for finches that are nesting or breeding.

Create an egg mix to feed to the finch at least three times per week. Boil one egg in a pot of water. When the egg cools, crush the egg and the eggshell into small pieces. Mix in 1-1/2 tsp. hulled, unsalted sunflower seeds. This mixture provides the calcium the finch needs.
